Instrumentation: Standard Big Band - Style: Jazz Waltz / Swing
This sophisticated medley breathes new life into holiday standards through the lens of the jazz waltz. The arrangement weaves together "Silver Bells," "The Christmas Waltz," and "My Favorite Things" into a cohesive, seamless narrative.
The chart opens with a relaxed, traditional swing feel for the first two titles, utilizing contemporary harmonic substitutions to freshen the palette. A lyrical piano interlude—offering a quick and subtle, rubato nod to Guaraldi’s "Christmastime is Here"—serves as the bridge between the two opening tunes.
The energy shifts dramatically for the finale, "My Favorite Things." Here, the arrangement moves into a driving "double-time feel" for the main melody before settling back into a swinging groove, leading to a harmonically explosive conclusion.
Conductor’s Rehearsal/Performance Notes
Rhythmic Feel: While the piece remains in 3/4 throughout, the band must be comfortable shifting stylized grooves. "Silver Bells" and "The Christmas Waltz" sit in a relaxed pocket; however, the "double-time feel" in "My Favorite Things" requires precision to remain light but driving without rushing the actual tempo.
Specific to the double time feel, the bass player can play root/five on 8th notes if necessary, keeping the drive, but simplifying the line. The drummer can drive 8th notes on the ride, the key to the feel will be the high-hat on the &’s of the beat during the double time feel.
The Interlude: The piano solo allows for a moment of breath and hints at the melancholy of "Christmastime is Here" before returning to the waltz feel.
Harmonic Texture: The harmonies are more advanced than standard holiday fare. Special attention should be paid to the final measures, which feature a massive polychordal structure. The ensemble creates a "wall of sound" by vertically stacking G Major, A Major, B Major, and C# Major triads.
