This piece perhaps more than his others epitomizes his "bad boy" image as a composer. Some of his pieces have been described as "sarcastic," "parody," "banal" and "droll." The plot of the opera revolves around a prince (the son of the King of Trifles) was cured of melancholia by Fata Morgana. In return, he had to search the world for Three Oranges that imprisoned the body and spirit of three princesses (which Morgana accomplished through witchcraft) containing both good and bad characteristics--which will he choose? The arranger's goal here was to make a piano solo from the orchestral version that was accurate as well as pianistic.
