Malacandra is a symphonic tone poem inspired by C.S. Lewis’s Science Fiction book, ‘Out of the Silent Planet’. The book itself has a theme of 3’s running through it: 3 human characters, 3 alien species, 3 ethereal creatures and
3 main sections. These 3 sections center on the main human character’s (Dr. Elwin Ransom) time in a spaceship
traveling to the planet Malacandra, his time with the Hross (one of the 3 alien species), and his time with the Oyarsa
(one of the 3 ethereal creatures). It was these sections that set the form of the piece while writing from the vantage
point of Dr. Ransom in hopes of placing the audience in his shoes.
