Les Falles 43
In a fast 3/4, this is a definite contrast from the pasodoble style of most pieces in the series. The music is generally challenging for all instruments, and includes prominent solos for Bb Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet, Horn, and Trombone as well as shorter solo passages in several other parts. A signature feature of No. 43 is the call and response section between woodwinds and brass, where the woodwinds are playing in unison/octaves while the brass have independent parts with overlapping rhythmic patterns.
Les Falles
This piece is one of over 100 I composed in honor of my favorite festival, Les Falles. Several different regional traditions are brought together in this festival. One is that groups of falleras and falleros walk through the streets of Valencia accompanied by a small marching band, carrying elaborate bouquets to the Plaza de la Virgen. But the numerous neighborhood associations don't have their own songs to play as they walk. I aim to correct that with this series of pieces. They are meant to fit in with the traditional music of the region and to support street dancing in the style of the place. Most of them are marches or pasodobles, but some are 6/8 marches or waltzes. The first 4 of these were composed in situ, the next two on the flight back to the US, and the rest over the course of the following months.
