Look inside the improvisational artistry of 2009 NEA Jazz Master Lee Konitz with transcriptions of solo passages from his early work with Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh, Sonny Dallas, and Elvin Jones, and more recently, Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden on the iconic albums Subconscious-Lee, Motion, and Alone Together. These select improvisations, resulting from years of study, listening, and performing, are now available for students and professionals to play and examine the inner workings of a master saxophone improviser. Alex Oliverio makes an important contribution to the study of jazz improvisation by providing transcriptions of 14 unique solos from Lee's early, mid, and later career. This book provides a first-hand examination of the thought process of a true spontaneous jazz improviser who found new ways of approaching a solo without relying on the typical musical clichés of his time. The high level of creativity achieved by Konitz's artistry made him one of the most influential jazz saxophone soloists of his era. Born in Chicago, October 13, 1927, Lee Konitz studied clarinet as a boy, but soon switched to alto saxophone while becoming attracted to the jazz of the 1940s. He joined a dance band that brought him to New York where he connected with pianist/mentor Lennie Tristano and became one of his best students. There began his deep exploration into jazz improvisation. His early encounters with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, and Stan Kenton helped develop his style and reputation. For over 70 years, Lee played in clubs and jazz venues experimenting and refining his inventive style leaving a true improvisatory legacy for the world to explore.
