Bd. 5. Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Edited by Milan Kuna. Clothbound. Czech title: Antonin Dvorak - Korespondence a dokumenty 5. Book. With Publication language: Czech/German/English. 484 pages. Editio Baerenreiter Praha #H07760. Published by Editio Baerenreiter Praha (PA.H07760).
ISBN 9788070583906. 9.65 x 6.81 inches.
After publication of the first four volumes, containing the complete set of correspondence written by Antonin Dvorak in his own hand, this projected eight-volume edition continues with this, the fifth volume, containing a critical edition of the first portion of letters that Dvorak received. The editorial team, headed by the prominent Dvorak researcher Milan Kuna, has here assembled correspondence from the years 1877 to 1884, during which Dvorak became a truly world-famous composer. Here we find letters from, among others, Johannes Brahms, Eduard Hanslick, the publisher Fritz Simrock, Frantisek Ondricek, Jan Neruda, and Dvorak's librettist Marie Cervinkova-Riegrova. The letters are always printed in the original language; those written in foreign languages (i. e. in German or English) are also translated into Czech. For foreign researchers, summaries of Czech letters are provided in German and English. As with the previous volumes, this one is equipped with indexes of persons and works and with a detailed footnote apparatus. Because the majority of correspondence contained in this volume is published here for the very first time, it will be not only an indispensable handbook for Dvorak researchers, but above all interesting reading for all who wish to become better acquainted with the personality of this great master of Czech music.
