Starting with material appropriate for the first lesson, it moves rapidly through discoveries, music and activities equivalent to The Music Tree and Levels 1 and 2. On completing the book, the student is ready for Level 3 of the Clark Library. The book provides quantities of music, all of it selected or composed to appeal to the older student -- Studies (introducing each of 65 new subjects), Repertoire (155 solos and duets), Accompanying and Transposing (62 melodies to accompany and to transpose to all major and minor keys), Sight Reading (107 one-line pieces that review each of the new discoveries and teach sight reading skills). In addition, the 22 units in 208 pages include: Technical Exercises, Rhythm Exercises, Written Work and Improvising. Great as a sightreading supplement
I've used this book for a few years in a rather unconventional way, one in which I think it's more successful than as a standalone method: as a sightreading supplement. For your typical blank slate beginner the info-dump at the beginning regarding rhythm, meter, note values etc. is just too fast and not nearly thorough enough. However, it might be just right for an adult who took piano years ago and only needs a quick refresher. The intervallic reading approach is absolutely fantastic and exactly how I believe it should be taught, both as a teacher and as a collaborative pianist who makes a lot of money from sightreading for last-minute gigs. I'm certainly not trying to name every note by letter as it goes by. Intervallic reading is how professional pianists survive.I don't find the music very interesting, although it does methodically introduce each new interval as it derives from the landmark notes. That's why I think this series is perfect for sightreading supplements.

Excellent
I am a private piano teacher and find this book to be perfect for beginners age 12 and up, or adults who had a few years of lessons as a child. Frances Clark was a genius in the area of pedagogy, and presents the material in a logical and thorough manner. No other book Ive found covers reading, theory, sight-reading, transposition, and repertoire so thoroughly. In a word, perfect. For young students, look at Frances Clark Music Tree series - primer book is called Time to Begin, then follows with books 1, 2A, 2B, 3, 4. Each level has an Activities book. Pure gold. Best method books on the market.

Best Adult method
I have used this method for 20 years with beginner adults, from 20 year olds to adults in their 60's. It is however, very helpful to understand the Music Tree method for young beginners in order to be successful with this method, but otherwise it is very well created. I do think the sight reading elements go ahead too fast, and other material needs to be supplemented to ease the pace for those who may need more time. The book tends to move fast at first and then can slow down with repertoire advancing fast, but not all pieces need to be perfected, as there are many choices, from original compositions, to folk tunes, jazz and classical repertoire. I have also found it very good in helping adults who are returning to piano.I will also put in a plea...PLEASE PUBLISH THIS BOOK IN A MORE USER FRIENDLY FORMAT... everything is printed too small -especially for older adults, the notation needs to be larger. Thank you again, Frances Clark for your amazing life's work!

Excellent course
I've used this course for years. It is certainly one of the best out there. It is NOT, however, designed for self-instruction, nor is it a method for teachers who do not familiar with interval-based instruction. I've had no issues with teaching the staff or locating notes. It is very graded. After about half-way through the book I start introducing additional material. At that point I stick with the core material in the book and start transitioning from the repertoire into other level-appropriate material.
