The KAMARINSKAYA is a traditional Russian folk dance. Today, the folk song is best known in the orchestral work by composer Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857), which is famous in part because it is the first orchestral work based wholly on Russian folk music. Glinka's arrangement uses two themes: a slow bridal song called IZ-ZA GOR, GOR VYSOKIIH (From Beyond the Mountain, the High Mountain) and the title song, which is a folk dance called a naigrïsh. The work later inspired Tchaikovsky to utilize folk songs in his music, culminating in his SYMPHONY No. 2, and the work was further praised by the group of nationalistic Russian composers called The Five, which was led by Mily Balakirev. This newly engraved critical edition by Carl Simpson boasts a preface that explains the history of the work, a list of the edition's sources, and a chart addressing the various discrepancies among the sources. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.1.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
