Editorial Note A point of historical and editorial interest occurs in measure 7 and other similar passages in the piece: On the second half of beat 2, Ludwig Nohl’s 1867 edition (the first publication of Für Elise) gives an E in the right hand. However, a surviving sketch by Beethoven shows a D at that spot. With the autograph manuscript lost, it remains unclear whether Nohl had access to a more complete source now lost, or whether he introduced the E as an editorial “correction” or misreading. In light of the D appearing in Beethoven’s own draft, this sheet music edition adopts that reading.
