Funeral March of a Marionete is geschreven in 1872 als onderdeel van de Charles Gounod’s Suite Burlesque voor piano. Deze suite was bedoeld als parodie op Henry Chorley, een muziek-criticus. Toen het stuk af was behield Gounod alleen deze treurmars. Deze mars is talloze keren opgenomen waarvan een van de eerste door John Phillip Sousa. Het werk is waarschijnlijk het meest bekend geworden als themamuziek bij het televisieprogramma Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Funeral March of a Marionette was composed in 1872 as part of Charles Gonoud’s Suite Burlesque for piano. This suite was intended as a parody of the music critic, Henry Chorley. When he had finished composing the piece, Gonoud decided to keep only the funeral march. This march has been recorded countless times, one of the first being with John Philip Sousa’s famous band. The piece is most well known from its use as the theme music to the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Cet œuvre était écrit en 1872 comme mouvement de la Suite Burlesque pour piano. Cette suite était destinée à parodier le personnage de Henry Chorley, un critique de musique. Après avoir fini la pièce, Gounod conservait seulement cette marche funèbre. La marche a été enregistrée souvent, la première fois par John Philip Sousa. L’œuvre est surtout devenu connu comme thème de la série télévisé Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Vom ganzen Werk hat Gounod lediglich diesen Trauermarsch behalten. Er wurde unzählige Male aufgenommen, zum ersten Mal übrigens von John Philip Sousa. Seine größte Popularität dürfte das Stück als Titelmusik der TV-Serie Alfred Hitchcock präsentiert erlangt haben, die in den sechziger Jahren in der ARD lief.
