Peter Sculthorpe's From The River for Piano and String Quartet.
This work recalls my childhood in a small village outside Launceston, in Tasmania. I spent many hours swimming in the nearby river, the North Esk.
There, while swimming, I often dreamed of being a composer when I grew up. This is the concern of From The River. The middle part of the work consists of a slower section in which doubts seem to be expressed: my music teacher had told me that all the composers were dead. Such a notion, however, is soon dismissed and the earlier, flowing music returns. - Peter Sculthorpe
