Toccata (from the Italian toccare 'to touch, to hit') is one of the oldest names for instrumental pieces and describes a musical form that is usually comprised of several parts. Each part is constructed from a musical idea suchas, for example, chords, runs or imitations of a short motive.
Toccatissimo is a composition that consists of several parts, executed in different tempos. The main key is G-major. The work beginswith fast runs that move in upward and downward sequences. After this, a quiet motive follows with fast interjections following from the first part, this time, however in A-major. The next theme in A minor alternates between4/4and 3/4 measures. After a short cadence, a merry waltz sounds which is then followed once again by the first part in G-major. After a short cadence, a blues is performed that is interrupted by a rhythmic block. The quietsection that now follows segues to the first motive as a fiery finale.
