Fire is part of the Elements Suite and recording created during a visit to the Pacific Northwest, where the natural world exhibits an unusual intensity and the elements are quite prominently display.
With this music I hope to capture the contrasts between the four elements as well as the dual natures within each of them. Water, for example, is both a source of life and potentially dangerous. Air is both breath and wind. Fire comforts or burns. Only Earth seemed to me continuous and dependable.

Unison hands setup up the the spark with bits of counterpoint and harmony dropping in to push the flame higher until it takes off in a fury of flame. Zooming out to a milder, wider perspective (think distant grass fire) the music next recedes to a comforting (if still hotly busy) fireplace. But before complacency set ins, the real fireworks start with a virtuosic but very playable conclusion ending in a furious burst.Composer’s comments:
