This Concertino was originally written by D. Shostakovich for 2 pianos in 1953 and was dedicated to his 16 year-old son Maxim, who first performed this composition on November 8, 1954 at the Moscow Conservatory. A one-piece composition lasting 11 minutes in the form of a Sonata Allegro is absolutely adequate for the 2 pianos as it was chosen by the author. A careful in-depth analysis of the thematic material of this work, its development, interweaving and collision of the main topics reveals a deep inner content, which, as always with Shostakovich, does not lie on the surface. Philosophical reflections in the form of musical images resonate with Mussorgsky and include, for example, such as the Artist and Time, the Artist and the Dictator, People and Faith. High tragedy, irony and sarcasm, all these qualities are also characteristic of this opus. All of the above encouraged me to transcribe this composition for piano and orchestra.
