The word "Cortege" means Procession. This is a great piece to show contrasting elements and different groups of instruments playing together. This processional march starts out with a 4 measure rhythmic melody and harmony, then the flute has an obligato part as the 4 measure melody is played again. Then the lower instruments take the melody while the flute and 1st clarinet have the counter melody. Next comes the lovely slower melodic sections. The first part starts with the melody in the trumpet, a duet in the saxophones, a trio in the flutes and clarinets, a solo in the trombones, all with dotted half notes or oom pahs underneath. ending the slow part with the whole band joining together. Then it returns to the rhymic procession march to end the piece. It's a delightful addition to any concert.
