A beautiful 20th century organ classic
The University of Kentucky commissioned this work in 1967, premiered by Haskell Thompson. More than a chorale prelude, it is a substantial setting (six minutes duration, not five as indicated on the score) of the composer's own hymn on Phineas Fletcher's text, reflecting on all three verses. The musical language is consistently lyrical, the harmony warm and freely chromatic, fluidly moving through various levels of tonality. After reaching a dramatic at the end of the second verse, the piece shifts into a gentler, with a quietly comforting conclusion. Highly recommended!
