1923 standard popularizing the already existing Charleston dance, named after Charleston, South Carolina. The distinctive jump beat, which consists of the first part of the Afro-Cuban clave rhythm, is a driving yet playful rhythm. Gershwin gives it a nod in his 1927 Concerto in F, 1st movement.
