The best known title for this piece "Moonlight Sonata" was not given to it until after composer Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) death. The full, formal title is "Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2". Beethoven added a note on the original work in Italian, stating that it is a sonata but in the form of a fantasy. Beethoven dedicated the piece to one of his students and the piece was one of his most popular works during his lifetime. This arrangement makes the piece more approachable for less experienced players. It includes optional note names, a thinner texture, an easier key, and chord symbols to assist in learning it.
