Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere Mei, Deus, composed in 1638 for use in the Sistine Chapel during Holy Week, remains a powerful testament to the expressive depth of sacred choral music. While stories of strict performance restrictions and secret ornamentations have become part of the work’s enduring mythos, there is little evidence to support such claims. In reality, much of this narrative likely stems from later romanticized retellings rather than documented historical fact.

This arrangement for concert band draws on various sources to capture the spirit and texture of the original, including embellishments suggested by Pietro Alfieri and an erroneously placed Mendelssohn transcription, published by W.S. Rockstro in early editions of the Grove Dictionary of Music. Additional original ornamentation has been carefully woven in to highlight the expressive capabilities of wind instruments, offering a respectful and imaginative reworking of this iconic work for a new performance context.
