When Jean asked me to compose didactic pieces for guitar, I decided on an innovative approach that would play on the need for stylistic variety as well as on the beautiful sound that first attracts so many people to the guitar. And so, all along this little volume, the composer becomes a transmitter of music. The music is definitely his own, yet it shows the various influences French, Hungarian, Spanish, 20th century North and South American music have left on him and of which the guitar then becomes the "resonator". Having closely observed and heard many guitar students, I have endeavoured to transmitt the various "gestures" of so many different musical worlds. The instrumental gestures that are called for build up on the know-how budding guitarists progressively acquire through (hopefully thanks to) their practice, while enriching their stylistic and sonic world. The idea is to have specific technical gestures become elegant gestures, and to have the students' experience of their own sound arouse their curiosity for other types of music. - David Lacroix.
