Fanny Hensel Sheet Music

About Fanny Hensel

Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn Bartholdy, 1805-1847) was a German composer and pianist of the early Romantic era, and the gifted elder sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Her musical style is characterized by its lyrical beauty, expressive emotionality, and often virtuosic piano writing, encompassing a rich repertoire primarily of Lieder and piano pieces. Despite societal expectations that limited women's public musical careers in the 19th century, Hensel composed prolifically and established herself as a significant, albeit often overlooked, figure whose profound musical contributions are now increasingly recognized and celebrated.

  • Fanny Hensel composed over 450 works, including more than 250 Lieder (songs) and over 125 pieces for solo piano, though the majority remained unpublished during her lifetime due to social conventions and her family's reservations.
  • Six of her songs were initially published under her younger brother Felix Mendelssohn's name in his Opus 8 and 9 collections. Her "Easter Sonata" was also mistakenly attributed to Felix for a period.
  • A child prodigy with perfect pitch, Hensel was a formidable pianist who could play J.S. Bach's entire Well-Tempered Clavier from memory by the age of 14, and by some accounts, her piano skills were comparable to her brother's.
  • She hosted influential bi-weekly private concert series known as "Sonntagsmusiken" (Sunday musicales) at the Mendelssohn family home in Berlin, which served as important cultural gatherings for artists, musicians, and intellectuals of the time.

Performing Fanny Hensel's sheet music offers a deeply rewarding experience for musicians ranging from intermediate to advanced levels. Exploring Hensel's compositions provides a unique opportunity to connect with the work of a pioneering female composer whose "chromatically adventurous" style offers a fresh and compelling voice within the classical repertoire.
