This was originally the very last chorus/instrumental item in Purcell's opera "Dido and Aeneas", and follows Queen Dido's lament "When I am laid in Earth".
"With drooping wings is also known as "The Cupids' Dance", as, after the chorus finishes singing, the orchestra plays the stunning chorus one more time, on it's own.
The "cupids" in the title, are referencing the text:
With drooping wings, ye cupids come,
And scatter roses on her tomb,
soft and gentle as her heart.
Keep here your watch, and never part.
I have arranged "With drooping wings/Cupids' Dance" for 2 violins and organ, and the arrangement would work very well for funerals, or for any occasion where a somber piece is needed.
The arrangement is not difficult for the violinists and could be played by students from about Grade 3 and up: it's in G minor and has a few accidentals. The organ part is not just a "vocal score", repeating everything that the violins are playing, but more like a continuo part which converses with the two violinists: it has some independent, melodic material too. The organ part is also not very difficult, the chords lie very well, so this could also be played by a student, or a violin teacher who isn't a joint 1st study pianist/organist.
