By Brian Stevens. Composed by Brian Stevens. Arranged by Brian Stevens. This edition: pdf. Christian, Contemporary, Easter, Lent, Praise & Worship. 53 pages. Virgo Music Canada #1353675. Published by Virgo Music Canada (A0.1793498).
This cantata, my seventh, is the first centered on the Easter story. This work marks yet another shift in my writing. I feel the musical journey laid out in this cantata delves deeper into the conversations and emotional experience of the biblical characters. As I placed myself into the shoes of each person, fresh perspectives presented themselves. My goal became clearer; the task being to illuminate the personal trysts, trials, triumphs and defeats of the people described in the narratives. Such an approach, I believed might allow both singers and listeners to experience the stories in a more personal way.
I discovered moments of haggling and humour with the opening song Do you have a Donkey or a Horse. Musical deceit rang forth in Judas Iscariot, as the high priests called upon Judas to conspire with them. The ballad, Family of Friends provides balance by setting a scene of fellowship with family and friends.
I could not avoid the questions of courage and cowardliness that present themselves throughout these passages. Peter promises to be true, yet Jesus foresees the path ahead in You will Deny Me. Jesus continues his challenge to the disciples with Do not Fall Sleep. We, too fail to follow faithfully and later are filled with lament and regret.
Rage and fury tempered with a bit of truthful questioning in How Many Lies allowed me to reflect on Herod’s role, a man with a tough job looking for an out in Do a Little Miracle. He played a central role in setting the stage for Prophecy Fulfilled, the events of Good Friday. The story continues with the question, Where Have They Taken My Lord, a conversation between Mary and Jesus that reminds us that he is always with us.
The jubilant Jesus Christ is Risen today, Alleluia can be presented in two different ways: pealing forth like a trumpet fanfare or swinging to an earthy beat rooted in percussion.
This cantata had its debut at Faith United Church on Easter Sunday Morning, 2010. Editorial thanks to Cynthia Doyle and to Diana Chappell for final format, layout, proof and editing.
