re: pianist issues
With the exception a few small sections of enharmonic spelling and chromaticism, the key of F# is actually the easiest key to play this composition in. The ease of finding the moving notes in the right hand is facilitated by the use of mostly black notes. A shift to F in particular leaves the hands in several very uncomfortable positions for repeated lengths of time. That said, Very few people ever perform this piece at the marked 144 bmp tempo. Anything under 116 begins to drag unpleasantly, but the 144 is only suitable for the lightest and most flexible of voices, something that rarely fits the character of this song cycle. Though it is marked for medium voice in the original key, this cycle in general is meant for classically trained voice with good technique. Tessitura lies on the high side for some mezzos, but that shouldn't keep a good vocalist from being successful.

Killer key, pretty song
The song itself is quite pretty, but for the accompanist, the key of F# is a killer, especially at a proper tempo. If you don't have an excellent accompanist, this song is not for you. Try the lower key if your vocalist can handle it. Your accompanist will thank you!
