This concerto, subtitled 'in Sea' is not intended to paint a specific picture of the Sea but instead it is loosely based on visions of the sea and the way it moves and flows,

a general feeling of the ocean and it's different moods. Similarly, the piece, whilst it takes us on a journey through different keys and harmonies,

ends up in the rich key of C major, hence there is double meaning to 'in Sea'.

Whilst this concerto does loosely follow the traditional Concerto format of 3 movements; in this Violin Concerto all the movements are interlinked,

creating one continuos flow. Also, unlike a traditional concerto which has themes separated within the different movements,

this whole concerto is anchored by two main themes which re-occur throughout and act as a bridge between different parts of the piece.

Both themes are first stated by the Violin Soloist and serve different purposes:

the first theme can be first heard in the opening bars of the piece, in the Violin Solo part (bars 5-23). This theme is a clear statement from the Sea to the world.

The second theme is first heard in bars 196 -199 and is much more contemplative, offering, at first, a glimpse into the beaty of the ocean and ultimately towards the end of the concerto, its triumph over everything else.
