McGranahan was a 19th century singer, teacher, evangelist, and hymnist from Pennsylvania. His hymn was also known by the title, "Hath Everlasting Life." Its text is based on John 5:24, John 6:47, among others. Sections A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the refrain. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of a German augmented sixth chord. Section C then introduces a descant by yours truly. Più grandioso is a more grand manner.
