Varanda dos Avós – A Sonic Portrait of Childhood is a solo piano piece written in the style of choro, portraying affectionate memories of my childhood and my relationship with my grandparents. The title Varanda dos Avós (Grandparents’ Veranda) was chosen for its strong symbolic meaning. The veranda represents a transitional space between the interior of the house — associated with my grandparents’ generation — and the backyard, a space belonging to my generation and to my siblings and cousins. It is a place of encounter, where two very different generations do not collide, but rather complete one another. The piece is structured in three sections: • Section A: represents my grandfather • Section B: represents the children • Section C: represents my grandmother Varanda dos Avós is thus a sonic portrait of coexistence, memory, and affection, where tradition and childhood engage in a natural and continuous dialogue.
