The German-born Belgian composer Alexander Stadtfeld (1826–53) produced around one hundred twenty works during his brief life, nearly all of which have remained unpublished. Among these compositions, the Trio in F Major for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano (1846) is the only work featuring woodwinds. Following in the footsteps of the French oboist Henri Brod, who pioneered the oboe-bassoon-piano trio genre in the early nineteenth century, Stadtfeld’s trio balances musical elegance and charm with virtuosic flair, capitalizing on each of its three instruments’ technical capabilities and characteristic sound. Preserved in manuscript at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles and previously thought to have been left incomplete, this work offers a tantalizing first glimpse into the musical language of this forgotten young composer.
