Published by Jackel Fung (A0.1734285).Too Late to Regret is a solo cello piece that tells the story of a man who has just lost all his friends and family in a tragic accident, and how he is consumed by regret for not cherishing his time with them when they were still alive. This piece draws inspiration from Brahms’ Intermezzo in E-flat minor, Op. 118 No. 6, Chopin’s Funeral March and Liszt Sonata in B minor. These works influenced me to create a deeper emotional atmosphere.
The narrative of the piece follows the man as he struggles to fall asleep, tortured by guilt and sorrow. When he eventually falls asleep, he finds himself dreaming of his childhood, reliving his joyful times with his friends and family. These memories are bittersweet; he recalls playing with his friends while his family scolded him for being lazy and ignoring his homework. Yet, just as he begins to lose himself in these comforting moments, he is interrupted by his coughing, and hoping to return to the dream where his loved ones are still alive. His failure to recapture that dream makes him more depressed, causing him to turn into madness and eventually make an inevitable action.
The music follows the emotion of the story, beginning with high-register harmonics played in fifths to represent a dreamy sound. As the man slips into his dream, repeated notes suggest that he has revisited these memories before and the lyrical melody shows his happiness when he sees everyone he loves. The cello’s lower, forceful tones represent a stern parental figure, while counter-melodies played more softly express the man’s inner fear and trying to escape that moment. Glissandi, representing tears, are combined with percussive taps on the cello’s body to imitate the sound of coughing, highlighting the raw, emotional atmosphere.
When he wakes from his dream, the mood shifts to chaos, conveyed through rapid descending motifs that symbolize his emotional collapse. As the tempo slows, it reflects his desperate attempt to calm himself with tranquilizers. However, this moment of quiet is short; he is soon overcome by painful memories again. In the final section, he reflects on his mother’s love, realizing how he took her presence for granted. The cello’s voice becomes softer, more mournful, before sinking into its lowest register as he reaches his breaking point. The piece concludes with low register and intervals to represent his last few heartbeats, where he made an irreversible decision to end his life. By the time the cello was put down, he finally escaped from those chaos and could rest in peace.
This composition is intended as a narrative journey, exploring the themes of memory, loss, and the miserable truth of mortality. Maybe living is what we’ve been striving for all along, but when we’ve taken on too much, dying might feel like a relief. Perhaps, it is even kinder than enduring a living death. Through varied timbres, dynamic contrasts, and expressive techniques, the cello becomes a voice of human emotion, capturing the protagonist’s suffering as he faces the permanence of his past mistakes.
