One of the most prominent English composers of the Baroque period, Henry Purcell showed a mastery of instrumental writing particularly in his Fantasias written early in his career. As organist, organ maker and keeper of the King's instruments to several English Kings, Purcell's instrumental composing highlighted his creativity in contrapuntal writing, harmonic inventiveness including chromaticism and his understanding of the virtuosic capabilities of the instruments. Scored for trumpet in B-flat with alternate C trumpet part, horn in F, and trombone with substitute treble clef euphoniium part, these arrangements for can be performed separately or even as a suite as each Fantasia has its own character. The recording is of the entire edition.
