Three Carols by Peter Warlock Flute Choir - Sheet Music

By Peter Warlock

These three carols were composed in 1923 and first performed in the same year in a version for SATB choir and orchestra under the baton of Ralph Vaughan Williams, to whom they are dedicated. The most widely known of the set is perhaps the tender Scots lullaby Balulalow, which frequently features in carol services and festive concerts. Its serene melody is gently supported in the second verse by a rocking accompaniment and crowned with a high, pianissimo descant, creating a sense of stillness and wonder. The two outer carols sparkle with rhythmic charm and festive energy. Tyrley Tyrlow plays with the placement of three quavers within the 6/8 metre, creating a playful, lilting momentum. The Sycamore Tree resounds with trumpet calls and pealing bells, evoking a jubilant, celebratory atmosphere. Both of these faster carols are rich in word painting, with vivid musical gestures that mirror the unfolding stories in each verse. The lyrics are included as a source of inspiration, to help you capture the character and colour of each section. The three carols can be played as a set, or individually to give a sprinkle of magic to a Christmas concert!
