Composed by English Carol. Arranged by Stephen Main. Christmas, Christmas Dawn, Christmas Day, Christmas Night, Christmas Vigil. Walton Choral. Sacred. Octavo. 16 pages. Walton Music #WW1532. Published by Walton Music (GI.WW1532).
UPC: 884088995164. English. Text source: Traditional English carol.
The Holly and The Ivy is an old carol with an even older text that shows both Christian and pagan influences (holly has been associated with the Winter Solstice since Druid times). The text was amended over centuries to touch upon various symbolic and theological aspects of the birth of Jesus, all while maintaining the directness of the folk song. In this arrangement, the soloists are essentially storytellers, and should sing simply with careful attention to words. It is the choir's refrain that reflects the older, pre-Christian worship of nature, and perhaps ironically, leaves the listener with a sense of innocent Christmas joy.
