This work evokes the unsettling atmosphere of haunted woods. The juxtaposition of (unrelated) parallel triads and fifths, often over a pedal point, provides the key musical material. The piece develops over an arch form. The introductory parallel chordal motifs, with answering phrases, return alone at the end as the work turns full circle. A main second section (returning slightly modified as the penultimate passage) explores turning motifs of semitones and tones over an ostinato of parallel fifths. The apex central section is a series of textural variations of parallel major chords and arpeggios over a theme based mainly on a pedal point. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players.
