By Henrietta Atkin. Composed by Johann Walter/Pope Gregory I. Arranged by Fughetta/Hymn Prelude. This edition: pdf. Baroque, Christian, Lent, Sacred. Score. 3 pages. Henrietta Atkin #1344968. Published by Henrietta Atkin (A0.1784905).The hymn tune "Erhalt Uns, Herr," more commonly known as "The Glory of These Forty Days" is for the season of Lent. (It also is sung to the lyrics "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word")
Fughetta was a type of counterpoint in the 17th and 18th century. It sounds like its parent, the fugue, but is shorter and less involved. The opening phrase makes four entrances in tonic and dominant, then the theme cycles through related keys separated by sequences and episodes.
Baroque composers Walther, Zachow, Pachelbel and Telemann set many hymn tunes in this charming style.
