'Gattaca' is a 1997 American dystopian science fiction film starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. The film presents a future society where children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents; the film's title is based on the letters G, A, T, and C, which stand for guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine, the four nucleobases of DNA. The film's composer, Michael Nyman, was nominated in the 55th Golden Globe Awards (held in 1998) for Best Original Score, losing out to 'Titanic' by James Horner. Regardless, the score showcases Nyman's trademark minimalist style and this fresh arrangement of the stand out track from the score ('The Departure') is a great introduction to his work for band and audience alike; perfect as a contrasting slow selection for a concert of film music.
