Belisia is the old Merovingian name of the Belgian town of Bilzen who commissioned this composition. It is also the composer’s place of birth. The work has two main themes. The melancholic theme in a minor key refers to the many ravages the town has suffered through the years and the second theme, stately and heroic, represents the inner strength and courage of the proud inhabitants of this town.
Belisia ist der alte merowingische Name der belgischen Stadt Bilzen, die Auftraggeber dieser Komposition und zugleich auch Geburtsort des Komponisten ist. Dieses Werk ist rund um zwei Themen aufgebaut. Das melancholische Thema in Moll bezieht sich auf die zahlreichen Zerstörungen, welche die Stadt in der Vergangenheit erleiden musste. Deux thèmes jalonnent l’œuvre : le premier, mélancolique, rappelle que la ville a subi plusieurs épisodes de destruction importants ; le second, plus héro que, illustre la force intérieure et le courage des habitants de Bilzen.
