McGranahan was a 19th Century sunger, composer, and teacher from Pennsylvania. Wittle was a 19th Century hymnist, evangelist, and American Civil War veteran from Massachusetts. This hymn's text is based on Psalm 60:4. Sections A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the chorus. A modulation to a new key occurs just before section C with the help of a French augmented sixth chord. A descant is then added by yours truly.
