Published by Andrew Middleton (A0.1452336).Take Five Maurice, is a tongue and cheek arrangement that combines the orchestral forces and the gradual increasing instrument forces of Ravel’s Bolero, with the melodies and chordal pattern of Take Five by Paul Desmond. Following the instrumental structure of Bolero, the piece begins with softer timbres of the woodwinds in the same manner Ravel uses the orchestra, gradually becoming much more raucous. The finally of the piece follows a similar key change to heighten the climax of the music as well as a similar trombone glissando motif found in Bolero as well the jazz styles Paul Desmond would have played.
The piece is scored for: Piccolo, 2 flute, 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets in B flat, Bass Clarinet in B flat, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B flat, 2 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Tuba Timpani, Cymbals, Tam-tam, drum kit, harp, celesta and strings.
