Alexander Borodin's (1833-1887) Symphony No. 3 in A minor was written between 1886 and 1887. However, it remained unfinished at the time of his death, with only a sketch of the first movement and a completed version of the second movement, which is an orchestration of a work he had written for string quartet from Les Vendredis. Nothing of the third and fourth movements was ever produced. Following his death in 1887, composer Alexander Glazunov completed and orchestrated the two movements available, which were then published in 1889. Even though it remained unfinished, Symphony No. 3 is in good company with Borodin's tone poem Steppes of Central Asia, opera Prince Igor, and Symphony No. 2 in creating a uniquely Russian musical identity. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
