With his six symphonies for organ, written between 1895 and 1930, Louis Vierne carried on the splendid tradition of this genre and brought it to its peak. The 3ème Symphonie op. 28 was composed in 1911 at one of the most difficult periods in Vierne’s life. His mother died on 25 March of that year and his friend and mentor Alexandre Guilmant four days later. But Vierne was especially productive at this depressing time. On 18 May he started work on the symphony which many have described as his most inspired and his most successful from a structural viewpoint.
