The 27 concerti of the Symphoniae sacra II are milestones in the development of the German-language sacred concerto for virtuoso solo singers, instruments (mostly violins) and basso continuo. Published one year before what became, by far, the more well-known Geistliche Chormusik of 1648, they show another artistic side of Schütz, alongside the traditional, vocal polyphony scored for larger ensembles. In the Stuttgart Schütz Edition the works are now presented for the first time ever in an edition based on a comprehensive new investigation of the sources which does justice to the differentiated source situation and at the same time is oriented toward musical practice. The edition includes detailed explanatory texts.
