By Alexander Scriabin. By Alexander Scriabin. Arranged by Tim Chiew. This edition: pdf. 20th Century, Jazz. Jazz Combo. 16 pages. John's Green Arms Productions #1403011. Published by John's Green Arms Productions (A0.1843469).
This is a late middle period Scriabin solo piano work. Op 52, the one before the fifth sonata. Like the sonata, it makes extensive use of dominant tonalities, suspended fourths, augmented and 9#11s. The harmonies are too good to restrict to just the classical music world and the solo piano. Since Scriabin is already terrifically popular with jazz musicians (e.g. Monk, Chick Corea, and Alexander Scriabin's Ragtime Band to name but a few) and afficionados (e.g. through references in popular culture, such as in movies like Babylon), why are there not more jazz arrangements of his works here? So I'll start the ball rolling with this one for jazz quintet - tenor saxophone, guitar, piano, bass and drums. The guitar part could be easily adapted for another frontline instrument like trumpet if so desired, but I imagined there could possibly be more interest from guitarists since it is Scriabin's harmonies which are so intriguing. The original composition changes time signature just about every bar but spends most of its time in 15/16, three groups of five, so I've set this arrangement in 3/4 which is arguably Scriabin's most natural time signature. The key is kind of C so no need to be scared of the usual F# which would turn into G# for the tenor!
