The short comic cantata DER SCHULMEISTER IN DER SINGSCHULE was composed by Christoph Ludwig Fehre (1718-1772), though it has long been spuriously attributed to Georg Philipp Telemann as his TWV 20:57. Arranger Fritz Stein describes the story as, The old Kantor of the Hamburg Gymnasium and Johanneum, himself inured to the troubles of his position, depicts with sparkling humour and irony a singing lesson given to his slow-witted and naughty boys, by a hyopcondriac, grumbling though fundamentally warm-hearted schoolteacher, who zealously pursues his art. This joke, obviously intended for students, offers no technical difficulties, especially as it can be performed simply with harpsichord or pianoforte accompaniment or with the expanded string orchestra and keyboard. Fehre's original being lost, the only surviving version is the orchestration by Christoph Ernst Friedrich Weyse (1774-1842). This arrangement by Fritz Stein attempts to recreate Fehre's original version, though some of Weyse's harmonization has been retained. Instrumentation: Hpchrd (in sc): Str (4.4.0.3.3; no Va): Solo Bar: Chldren's Chorus. The harpsichord/piano part being in the score, an organization seeking to perform the work with just keyboard accompaniment need only order two copies of the score. The score also serves as the vocal score for the baritone soloist. This edition boasts the original German and an English translation by Charles J. Warner. The full score and set of score and parts are available separately. Reprint edition.
