Schubert's seminal chamber composition, the Piano Quintet in A major, D667, commonly known as 'The Trout' or 'Die Forelle,' is certainly one of the greatest pieces of music ever penned. Its rich textures and lovely melody create an unforgettable musical experience. Its celebration of nature's beauty stems from a summer trip in the Austrian Alps which inspired the young Schubert to rework a song into this complex chamber-piece. Composed of five alternating movements, 'The Trout' uses unique orchestration (substituting a double bass for the second violin) and gives special emphasis to the piano as well. But all the instruments take an equal role, and this may also be a reason for the piece's eternal popularity. 'The Trout' instantly brings to mind the calm serenity of the summer mountain air, and its sparkling melody and gentle poignancy leave a particularly happy feeling in both player and listener. It is a joy-filled piece but at the same time is filled with a serene quality that makes it one of the most exhilarating pieces for any musician to play, and one of the most important compositions for any musician to learn. This Music Minus One edition gives you that opportunity, in the comfort of your own home. Contains a high-quality printed music score with informative liner notes. Play-along audio is accessed online using the unique code inside the book and can be streamed or downloaded. The audio files include PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right. Performed by Harriet Wingreen, piano Accompaniment: The Classic String Quartet.

Okay, at best.
The recording, which is the real selling point of MMO is really quite awful in comparison to that of most of the Trout recordings out there. While the performers of the piece do wonderfully, the actual recording sounds like it was done too long ago. It might even be better to just purchase the score and use previous GREAT recordings to play with for practice. A competitor program knows as Dowani, (Three Tempi), offers a piano solo score (with orchestral cues) and a two piano reduction, as well two CDs with several versions of tempo for the concerto you're learning and a beautifully recorded full orchestral recording that sounds great and is quite fun to play with. Although this isn't a concerto, if the same sort of care and quality were put into this version, it'd be splendid. Also, not to be too finicky, but the publishing company labelled it as The Classic String Quartet on both the cover and the CD, when it is not even a string quartet. I'd save my money on this one.
