This beautiful melody from Korsakov's Scheherezade for orchestra is entitled "The Young Prince and Princess," and is a story that the main character (Scheherezade) told to the Persian king (Shariar) from the collection of fairy tales entitled 1001 Nights. According to this particular tale, the Persian king was betrayed and abandoned by his first wife and for that reason he would marry one new woman per night and she would be executed the following day (as revenge against womankind in general). Fortunately for Schehezade, she was able to avoid execution by telling the king one tale per night that were so enthralling to the King that he would keep her alive for the evening.
