Published in 1901, it is referred to as being a ‘Memory of the Louvre’, which is the inscription at the head of the score. A saraband is a court dance from the 17th and 18th centuries. Set exclusively in triple meter, the dance requires a slower tempo. Debussy was drawn to older forms and sonorities, always recasting them with his unique melodic and harmonic language.
