Elgar finished the piece in July 1888, when he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts, and he called it "Liebesgruss" ('Love's Greeting') because of Miss Roberts' fluency in German.
This arrangement for flute quartet (Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4 or Alto Flute) can be also used as music for wedding events.
