In July 1888, Elgar completed the composition while in a romantic relationship with Caroline Alice Roberts. He named it "Liebesgruss" or "Love's Greeting" due to Miss Roberts' proficiency in German. Before their engagement, she had gifted him a poem titled "The Wind at Dawn," which he transformed into a musical piece. Upon returning to London on September 22 from a vacation at his friend Dr. Charles Buck's residence in Settle, Elgar presented Salut d'Amour to Miss Roberts as an engagement gift.
Salut d'Amour is a musical composition originally written by Edward Elgar for violin and piano. However, here is a presentation of an adapted arrangement for flute and piano in the key of D major.
