Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1765484).“Salt Water Frolics” is a rollicking, upbeat salute to beaches and oceans and the adventures they evoke, a “welcome back” anthem to summer. It combines seven favorite nautical melodies into one showcase arrangement that is fun for musicians to play and audiences to hear.
After a short introduction, “Frolics” launches in E-flat with “By the Beautiful Sea,” followed by, in turn, “Drunken Sailor, “Sailing, Sailing (over the Bounding Main),” “The Sailor’s Hornpipe,” “Blow the Man Down,” “My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean,” “Asleep in the Deep” and finally a restatement of “By the Beautiful Sea.” The first four melodies are straightforward and clip along at 120 BPM. For the next three, the key changes to G, the tempo to 60. For the final round of “Beautiful Sea,” the key returns to E-flat and the tempo to 120 for a jolly, rousing close.Performance time is just under six minutes. All notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument.
A heads-up: In the fourth section, “Hornpipe,” the melody skips from instrument to instrument in four-eighth-note units. Although scattered among the group, the melody should be played smoothly and in tempo as though by a single instrumentalist.
