“Sakura Sakura” is one of the most well-known traditional Japanese songs.
The melody is believed to have originated in the Edo period as a practice piece for the koto, written for children, and its composer remains unknown.
The lyrics commonly sung today were added after the Meiji era and later revised in the Shōwa period, yet the song continues to be cherished as part of Japan’s educational song repertoire.

This work is a rhapsody for piano four hands, freely developing musical ideas based on motifs from “Sakura Sakura.”
The piece opens with the same two-note motif as the original melody (A–A–H), depicting the image of a single cherry tree standing along a quiet country road.
Although the still landscape suggests the arrival of spring, the cherry blossoms have not yet begun to bloom.

As the music unfolds, a lively procession—reminiscent of a festival ensemble—appears, transforming the atmosphere.
After it passes, silence returns once more.
The two-note motif reemerges as an underlying figure, from which a long, expansive melody grows, leading to a sudden full bloom of cherry blossoms.
“Sakura Sakura” is then sung out boldly, before the blossoms scatter just as quickly as they appeared, and the music fades away quietly, as if in gentle regret.

(Approx. 8 minutes).
